Hexagonal English oak box


Hexagonal English oak box with vertical bands of incised and stamped ornament, initialed ‘ID’ on the front board. Original lock, escutcheon, hasp, and hinges. This unusual form, of which only two other examples are illustrated, may have been designed to hold textiles.

Two boxes of the same form, one dated ‘1673’ are illustrated as fig. 3:379 in Oak Furniture, The British Tradition and as cat 24 in Bible Boxes: English Oak Table Boxes, Slopes, Desks and cabinets of the 16th and 17th Centuries, an exhibition held by the BADA, July, 1978.
