Late Elizabethan plank chest with original ironwork including elaborately whitesmithed hasp. Carved with two rows of nulled arcades, and lid with molded and incised decoration. Retains original cleats and lidded till. Exceedingly heavy oak boards exhibit deep, purple-red exterior surfaces, and are dry and untouched inside. Both edges of side board cut with probably original initials ‘SI’, gouged in a manner similar to a 1587 dated plank chest formerly owned by Clive Sherwood, lot 74, The Clive Sherwood Collection, Sotheby’s, 22 May, 2002. Feet reduced.
